Ok - did some digging and showed the picture to a few people. (Who all thought it was a baby copperhead, too...) and come to find out it's a DeKay's Snake. A common brown snake, non-poisonous! Here is a link with much more information:

That's a relief! I won't be quite as worried the next time I see one in the yard... And I'm pretty sure there will be a next time. Also glad we didn't kill it.
